Staying inside Instagram's messaging limits
Instagram automation has two kinds of limits: when you are allowed to message someone, and how fast your tools may call the API. Meta documents both. This article collects the numbers in one place and explains what they mean for a real flow.

When you may message someone
Meta's messaging policy gives businesses up to 24 hours to respond to a user, and messages sent inside that window may contain promotional content.
Comments open a narrower door
A comment on its own allows a single message. The private replies feature lets you send one message to the commenter within 7 days of a comment on a post or reel, and for Instagram Live only while the broadcast is running. Further messages depend on the person answering, and must then be sent within 24 hours of their response.
People get more time than bots
The policy includes a Human Agent tag that allows businesses to manually respond to user messages within a 7-day period. The important word is manually. It exists for a real person picking up a conversation, not for automated messages sent after the 24 hours are over.
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Standard window after a user message | 24 hours |
| Private reply to a post or reel comment | 1 message, within 7 days |
| Private reply to an Instagram Live comment | 1 message, during the broadcast |
| Follow-ups after the person answers a private reply | Within 24 hours of their response |
| Human Agent tag, manual replies only | 7 days |

How fast your tools may send
Separately from the timing rules, Meta caps how often an app may call the messaging APIs for each Instagram professional account. These values come from the Instagram Platform overview.
| API | Limit per professional account |
|---|---|
| Private replies to post and reel comments | 750 calls per hour |
| Private replies to Instagram Live comments | 100 calls per second |
| Send API: text, links, reactions and stickers | 100 calls per second |
| Send API: audio or video | 10 calls per second |
| Conversations API | 2 calls per second |
What the private reply limit means in practice
For comment campaigns, 750 private replies per hour is the ceiling that matters. A post that collects more keyword comments than that within an hour cannot answer all of them right away. The remaining replies have to wait in a queue, which is safe, because the 7-day window leaves plenty of room.
- Queue instead of dropping
When the hourly limit is reached, keep the remaining replies and send them as capacity frees up.
- Answer replies first
Follow-ups expire 24 hours after the person responds, so they deserve priority over new private replies, which have 7 days.
- Hand over before the window closes
If a conversation needs a person, route it early. See building a human handoff.
